Redemption has finally come! We all need a bit of this....

So, I was sent some music from this South African producer named Mangesto who's going to a University in the UK.
He's an up and coming producer but his music is quite sensitive, which is what drew me to use a couple of his tracks.
My friend, Ashleigh and I wrote the song and had my cousin DeVonde sing it with me.
We recorded it in my little home studio, where I do most of my records.
One day, I got everyone up out of their beds to meet me in Jamaica Queens so we could shoot a video, including my cousin Sheryl ( DeVonde's mother whom you will see in the VERY beginning of the video).
DeVonde had to do her costume changes in the car and the local drunks were trying to figure out what the heck we were doing.
Well, here's the end result!

Vocal Health Basics- How to Care for Your Voice

How to Properly Care for Your Voice
While there is no doubt that singing in front of a funk band requires practice and stamina, vocalists who sing for hours at a time with no amplification, over a full orchestra in a packed house holding 4,000 people, place even greater demands on their voices. Enter the opera singer and those who train them, such as Dr. Lynelle Wiens, Professor of Voice at the University of the Pacific Conservatory of Music in Stockton, CA.

Dr. Wiens is a former faculty member at the Symposium on the Care of the Professional Voice in Philadelphia, and at the Pacific Voice Conference in San Francisco. She was also a recipient of the prestigious “Van L. Lawrence Fellowship” that is awarded jointly by the Voice Foundation and National Association of Teachers of Singing in order to foster interdisciplinary education among laryngologists, voice scientists, singing teachers, and speech pathologists. Dr. Wiens has taught aspiring classical singers for more than thirty-three years and offers a number of simple, common sense tips that can help any singer to reduce the risks to their voice.

Like any other musical instrument, the voice needs proper care in order to be ready when called upon to perform. Wiens counseled, “In order to function properly, the voice needs to be well lubricated. The effects of alcohol, cigarette smoke, marijuana, and other drugs cause dryness of the vocal instrument and can lead to vocal fold edema and inflammation.”

Wiens advises that “It’s essential to drink lots of water before, during, and after performances. It’s also very important to get plenty of rest and exercise and eat properly between performances. To the extent that is possible, try to avoid noisy places where you will have to shout to be heard.” For example, trying to be heard above the sound levels backstage during an opening act or in a typical van traveling for hours on the freeway come to mind as situations that might lead to further strain on one’s voice.

Dr. Wiens cautions that “throat clearing, yelling or screaming, singing too loudly for an extended period of time, singing a song that is pitched too high or too low, or putting too much pressure on your voice, all increase the strain on it. If it hurts, you’re doing something wrong. Listen to what your voice is telling you.”

Over-singing on stage, especially when the monitor situation is not optimal, is another potential cause of vocal strain. Especially for musicians on tour, Wiens counsels, “You have to prioritize what you absolutely need your voice for and then make the best decisions to protect it.” So if you are out on tour and have been nursing a sore throat, maybe the band’s guitar player can give the interview and appear at the local record store for autographs while you stay back at the hotel to rest your voice for that night’s show. Wiens added, “Taking care of your body and learning to manage your physical and emotional stress are also key factors in maintaining good vocal health. Perhaps the best preventive care is good training. Finding a good coach is the best thing you can do for yourself.”

Dr. Wiens advises that a singer should seek a professional if they have a concern about their own vocal health. “If there is a sudden change in your voice from what is normal, or if you experience persistent hoarseness and/or vocal fatigue for more than two weeks, I would suggest you see an otolaryngologist (Ear, Nose and Throat doctor) who is experienced in caring for singers. Be sure to ask for a strobovideolaryngoscopic examination in order to get the most thorough assessment of the health of your voice.”

If there has been damage, a singer should ideally be treated by a team of professionals that may include an ENT doctor, a voice teacher/vocal coach that can help a singer avoid any techniques that may exacerbate problems, and if appropriate, a speech pathologist who can assist with proper rehabilitation of the voice.

“The voice is a delicate mechanism,” Wiens concludes, “so it makes sense to take preventive measures in order to help ensure a long and productive singing career.”

My Australia tour 2012... so far

Hey!
So, I'm STILL in Australia; gigging on the weekends.
On New Year's Eve, I gigged at the Palazzo Versace on the Gold Coast in Queensland. Needless to say, it was awesome. The lobby was transformed into a Nightclub dressed in Gold, as was I!
On New Year's Day, I had THREE shows! I flew from the Gold Coast to Sydney where I gigged at DayWash at 5pm, then the Cruise Bar for Get Together at 7pm, and finally, I flew back to my home-base, (Melbourne), and gigged at Trak for Rogue's recovery party by 11:30pm. WHEW!
I co-hosted a party for a radio station here in Melbourne for a new radio show called HER SOCIETY.. created and presented by my friends, Ginni & Natalie. We had a major blast. The place was packed, the entertainment was great, and I met some fun people.
I've been eating like a queen while here. My Aussie brother, Dave, cooks his butt off so eating at home in Melbourne is like being at a 5 star restaurant.
I DID dine in some actual 5 star restaurants. I Posted a few pics of Dave's food, and of the restaurants food.

Independence Day through this New Yorker's Eyes

Well, I can truly say that I had a "Happy Holiday".
   My best friend, Ashleigh & I went to Manhattan to view the Fireworks display that's put on each year by Macy's department store. (same folks who do the famous Thanksgiving Day parade).
It was absolutely awesome! I mean, they made smiley faces and the planet saturn with Fireworks! Can You believe that?
I loved it, as did the thousands of other people who bore witness to the event live. We were all, simply, AMERICANS.
   Everyone applauded several times before the big finale'..... at which time, we all exploded with cheers and screams of "that was awesome"!
   We had lots of space. No drama. Just fun!

So, ok! I performed for a huge party called WONDERLAND at Paramount Studios in Los Angeles, California.

The event was on the Paramount lot complete with movie sets, TV sets, acrobats, dancers, singers, and DJ Tony Moran, TONY MORAN spins at Wonderland!.

There were about 1500-2000+ people there, I guess. (I'm awful at guessing amounts of people and square footage, so there were probably many more people than I've stated)

Among MY guests were Jennia Fredrique from Noah's Ark and Tisha Campbell-Martin of House Party, Little Shop Of Horrors (movie), My Wife & Kids and Martin.

MY BAND AND MY HAMSTER

Well, good evening! :-)

Figured I'd update you on how Tuesday went.

So, yeah... we have new guys in the band. Went super well.... and on the first try! YAY! The crowd had a blast and we were well pleased.

We had GTO & Wallace with us on vocals, Mark Kelly on bass (he also plays with Michelle N'Dgeocello), & Nat Townsley (one of THE most coveted drummers on earth).

It went so well, I think we'll do this again on June 28th!

the internet pirates make it very difficult for

internet retail. They download then post free links to songs that don't belong to them, thereby stealing food from the copyright owners' and artists' mouthes.

   Some argue that if they're posting it, that means

they like it and wish to spread the word.

Well, if you like an artist and their music, isn't it

even more cool to show support by encouraging

purchases? After all, that's why the music is released on RETAIL sites and not in blogs.

Do we want you to blog about our music? YES! But we

Well, I had to give in and do it.
I started my own label last year.
I've just released my 2nd single from NY-O-Dae Music. (YAY!)

Why now? Well, we're in the day of "Do It Yourself", so I figured I'd do it myself. No middle man.
In house music, labels mostly release the music to digital stores and let the songs fly or fail on their own with no push nor promo ; and with all of the pirates posting the music to free sites, you don't stand a chance with someone in the middle taking a larger chunk of YOUR work than you get.
I figured I could , at least , push harder than they.
I advise any other artists with a bit of business savvy to do the same.

Inaya sings Gospel with Jimmie Earl Perry

A Buddy of mine, Jimmie Earl Perry (who now lives in South Africa), emailed me one day and asked me to sing a coupla songs with him on his album.

JESUS WILL FIX IT.

So, I know you're used to hearing me sing house music, but I WRITE and SING just about every genre.

We were in Germany attending a music production workshop where the company would mix and match different singer/songwriters with producer/songwriters of multiple genres.

My Performance for Rich's San Diego 2.12.2011

Okay,
so Saturday the 12th of Feb, I had a gig at Rich's San Diego.
My last song was the duet that Tichina Arnold (of tv shows; MARTIN, EVERYBODY HATES CHRIS), and I wrote and recorded together.

I told the audience that she wasn't going to sing but asked her to wave to the crowd.
I turned around and Tichina was fast upon me trying to snatch the microphone away. Needless to say, I was prepared for this.

She always warns me not to call her up, then she steals the show :-)
So, I had another wireless mic up my sleeve and made her perform OUR song together for a change.

I guess I don't have to tell you how funny she is and was.

Fun times at Kareoke

Ya know, since I sing for a living, I usually stay away from places that house people who might send a request my way. But THIS night, I felt like sangin'! :-)

Went to Kareoke with my good friend, Tichina Arnold
(Tichina Arnold pics and info), and simply acted like a nut.
Yawl know what happens when someone serves me a couple of patron or vodka shots :-)

Someone chose the song, and Tichina had them give me the microphone. I acted as if I didn't wanna do it at first, then rose from my seat as if I were on Star Search!

Here's a little snippet of me singing,

IT'S NOT JUST MUSIC ANYMORE

Sometimes, we musicians get caught up in the "music is everything" feeling. BUT, music is only PART of things.
The music business is 10% music and 90% business (or something close to that).

If your business is weak, no one will know of, listen to, nor buy your music, unless of course, you're one of the rareties.

To fully execute the "business" part effectively, one must have MONEY!

To gain income, one must have many irons in the fire.... gigs, CD sales at gigs, the proverbial T-shirt, personal studio, ring-tones, butcher shop, clothing line, cosmetic line, whiskey with your name on the bottle, cat food with your face on the can, etc.

...... and Reinvesting in oneself is the key.

So, we mustn't forget... music is NOT everything, but we can DO everything to propel ourselves far enough forward to be our own Conglomerate.

A Prime and perfect example; Duane Harden..... singer, songwriter (Tell Me Something), party promoter (Party In NYC at Cielo) real estate mogul, computer programmer, label owner (Soltrenz on Facebook) and now, restaurant owner (Duane Harden's Energy Kitchen in NYC) .

Some of you may, (or may not), know that I'm a Musical

Theater baby.

So, I dropped into the MONSTER (THE MONSTER NYC) last

Sunday and wound up singing 3 songs at the piano bar with

Billy the boys. :-)

   
Needless to say, vodka is NOT a memory serum so I forgot

many of the words and stumbled over what was to come

next.
Billy, the pianist, is the best. He mouthed the words to me while I belted out, 
"HOME, ONE NIGHT ONLY, & AND I AM TELLING YOU" as if thecheck was in the mail!

Backstage in Houston at Stero Live for "1"

Hola, My Peoples!
Awight so, after my gig at "1", Stero Live in Houston, we had a celebratory bottle of patron backstage :-)
Needless to say, we ALL had a blast!
I met a guy named AJ, a friend of my friend CeCe Sykes.
I was singing a gospel tune in my dressing room and he joined in and sang the harmony with me. WELL, you KNOW I had to do a re take on camera for yawl, right!!?!!

NEON PARTY IN HOUSTON

Had to perform at a party in Houston called THE "1" ULTRA DANCE PARTY AT STREREO LIVE!

Totally had a blast!
There were female impersonators dressed in neon with neon props, neon decor; I had neon on my face and in my hair.
I looked like some kinda alien onstage,,,glowing in the dark and things......LOVED IT!
I sang, NASTY GIRL, DO THE RIGHT THING, HORNY, LIFT IT UP, AND MOVIN UP.
The crowd was awesome and muy attentive!

Right, so, I've recorded a song called FEELIN FEELIN with Sting International.
It's absolutely dope, if I must say so myself. :-)
Thing is, It's been about a year and half and we haven't released it yet.
It's almost like when your grandmother keeps plastic over the furniture in the Living Room and you can't go in there. It's only for visitors!
Well, if you wanna hear this joint, you gotta be wherever Sting International spins,,, coz he's the ONLY one who has it!

I think we're gearing up for the unveiling soon, though.

Well,
Paris and I decided to go to South street seaport and fiddle around with the HD cam.
